ELIZA VAN BIBBER SCHOOL (EVB)– Pelly Crossing

Home to the Selkirk First Nation people, Eliza Van Bibber school is one of 11 Yukon schools that have joined the newly established First Nation School Board (FNSB) in the Yukon. Northern Tutchone is the traditional language of the Selkirk First Nation people.

Eliza Van Bibber School is a K-12 school with approximately 70 students. We are actively seeking committed and qualified educators who are dedicated to living in and being an active member of the community and who can adapt well to a remote lifestyle. Our educational professionals’ value authentic relationships and are committed to working with students, community, administration and the FNSB to make positive, progressive changes to education outcomes for learners of Pelly Crossing. QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:
Please clearly demonstrate on your cover letter and resume, how you meet the following qualifications and experience:

  • Possession of, or coursework towards, a Master’s Degree in Education or equivalent in educational administration and/or elementary curriculum;
  • Experience as a school administrator and/or educational leader, providing teachers and school-based staff with instructional leadership, supervision, mentorship and evaluation;
  • Recent teaching experience that takes a student-centered, strength-based, holistic and land-based approach.
  • Experience in assessing and responding to student needs in social /emotional domains, life skills, development, behavior support, threat assessment, and crisis intervention.
  • Experience working with First Nations students and communities is highly desirable and preferred.

NOTE: Candidates who have education, training and/or experience equivalent to the education criteria listed above will be equally considered.

DESIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND SUITABILITY:

  • Strong and effective leadership skills; demonstrated ability to motivate teachers and create a strong collaborative team;
  • Ability to work collaboratively with Selkirk First Nation government, Educational Support Workers (ESW), community Elders, and families;
  • Eagerness to learn the Northern Tutchone language and passionate to learn about and gain understanding of Selkirk First Nations culture;
  • A philosophy of inclusive education and excellent interpersonal, communication and collaborative skill working with parents, staff members, consultants and related agencies;
  • Desire and passion for developing and maintaining strong and respectful relationships and trust with students, their families, and the community as a whole;
  • Ability to implement restorative practice and positive behavioral interventions and supports;
  • Ability to implement effective support systems to assist at-risk students (e.g., mentorship opportunities, study groups);
  • A solid knowledge and understanding of the needs of both elementary and high school learners;
  • Able to support and implement enhanced programming in the K–12 curriculum;
  • Solid communication and engagement skills, promoting community involvement in school-based activities, the use of the facilities and educational programming;
  • Work with the community to create codes of conduct and define disciplinary policies and communicate procedures to students, staff parents and the community;

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

  • To be a Teacher in Yukon, you must hold a Teacher Certification in another Canadian province/territory first;
  • Successful applicants will be required to undergo a Criminal Record Check including a Vulnerable Sector Check.
  • Relocation may be available.
  • In communities outside of Whitehorse, there may be affordable, though modest rental accommodation (sometimes shared) provided by Yukon Housing Corporation. Private accommodation is limited. If not available, candidates will need to find their own private accommodation, with assistance where possible from the First Nation School Board.
